Radiation sources are invisible enemies that can cause the death of hundreds of thousands of people. This invisible enemy does not kill immediately, but gradually, destructively affecting internal organs and vital systems. The consequences of exposure to background radiation are reflected for several generations to come, which is why it is so important to monitor the level of radiation to prevent it from exceeding it in residential areas. To control radiation, special equipment is used. devices –radiation monitoring devicesdosimeters, Geiger counters, radiometers.

Classification of radiation monitoring devices

Radiation sources are used for peaceful purposes. These are not weapons of mass destruction, but sources of ionizing radiation necessary for the functioning of many branches of the industrial sector. All enterprises that deal with radio emissions pay great attention to the protection of the public and employees, but sometimes these measures may not be enough, so additionalradiation control (RC).

The norms of the Republic of Kazakhstan are determined by the standards adopted in the country. The standards are documented and set out in legislative acts.Depending on the purpose and situation, radiation control can be:

  • current;
  • prompt (urgent).

Current or routine RK is a mandatory measure carried out at enterprises and facilities where there is a risk of increasing background radiation. Current monitoring includes dosimetric and radiometric. The task is to prevent an increase in background radiation in the area where people are located and the spread of radiation beyond the boundaries of the sensitive facility. To implement the assigned tasks, instruments are used that measure the level of radiation in work areas and in the field, and also assess the level of radioactive contamination.

Operational or urgent radiation monitoring is required in emergency, non-routine situations when there is a risk of radiation spreading. This is possible during scheduled work at an enterprise, an accident, or liquidation of consequences after an accident. The task is to measure the background radiation level in order to then choose the optimal response method. To do this, radioactive dose indicators are measured on the territory, the safe time of stay at the site is calculated, and then measures are implemented to evacuate people and reduce radiation levels.

In the event of an emergency, for example an accident or a leak of radioactive substances from a closed facility, a comprehensive rescue operation is carried out. Dosimetric monitoring is carried out on everyone who is in the affected area. It can be personal or group. Group control involves checking several people at once who are at risk of exposure. Personal – checking each person individually. Prescribed to people who are directly in the irradiation zone.

For group control, devices are used that measure the power and radiation speed in the room, and then calculate the indicator for the number of personnel staying in this place.

For individual dosimetric testing, accumulators are used that show the total radiation indicators for a certain period of operation. Instruments displayalpha, beta, gamma radiation. Individual monitoring involves analyzing the degree of skin contamination, as well as the rate of penetration of radioactive substances into the body.

Radiation monitoring tasks

A person does not see radiation, does not feel its influence in any way if he finds himself in the distribution zone, therefore it is necessary to take measures to ensure control and increase the protection of the population from radioactive radiation. Instruments are used to monitor background radiation. Also, to ensure a set of measures, additional equipment is used - alarms, sirens, blockers, automated equipment shutdown systems.

Radiation safety measures are established and regulated for different industries separately depending on the degree of risk. The higher the risk of human infection and the spread of radiation, the more complexes and security systems are required at the facility.

CurrentRKdoes not require compliance with and implementation of a large number of measures, since the task is to ensure compliance with acceptable levels of radioactive background at the facility. The essence of the measures is to constantly monitor the radiation field, changes in indicators, register radiation doses, and check personnel.

The ongoing inspection also includes periodic monitoring of the degree of radioactive contamination of the environment. If permissible values are exceeded, measures are taken to normalize the background radiation.

In emergency situations, emergency measures are taken. The main task is to ensure the safety of people, evacuate them from the affected area, having previously assessed the degree of exposure.

Radiation monitoring

Today, near large cities there are industrial enterprises that use radiation sources. Satellite cities in which such enterprises are located are closed to free entry. You can only get into such a city if you have a pass, and enterprise workers and their families live there.

If there is a satellite near a city with an industrial plant that uses radiation sources, regular monitoring of the radiation level is carried out. Employees of special posts where radiation monitoring and compliance with standards are monitored are responsible for this.

If an accident occurs at an enterprise, a state of emergency is introduced in the satellite city. Rescue teams are immediately sent there for evacuation and assistance, measures are organized for operational radiation control - group andindividual.

It is necessary to immediately obtain accurate information about the level of radiation in order to form a picture of the danger. To do this, the radiation dose and nuclide composition of isotopes are measured. Only after this can measures be organized to protect the population and eliminate the consequences.

Types of radiation monitoring devices

High-tech devices are used to check and monitor the Republic of Kazakhstan. They must meet the standards and requirements of GOST, as well as safety standards. Radiation monitoring methods are different, so the equipment is selected taking into account the task at hand.

In human RK, biological testing tools are used. To check for superficial radiation, a thyroid scan is done. To check a person for a deep degree of exposure, counters are used and blood and urine tests are taken.

Biomethods are effective if you need to accurately determine the degree of radioactive damage to a person who is in the affected area at the time of the accident or near this place. An in-depth analysis of fluids also includes checking the level of lymphocytes in the blood and the number of chromosomal rearrangements in cells.

To monitor and analyze the degree of radioactive damage to humans, EPR stations are used to measure the absorbed dose of tooth enamel. This is the most accurate method for checking the absorbed dose of radiation. The essence of the procedure is to take samples from the enamel. Tooth enamel is a natural dosimeter, since radiation immediately settles on it, and the number of radicals corresponds to the radiation dose.

Radiation monitoring devices include:

  • dosimeters– measure indicators, type of radiation, irradiation power;

  • radiometers– assess the degree of nuclide contamination of air, liquids, products, and other environments; calculation is carried out depending on weight, volume, area; can be used to determine human radionuclide radiation levels;

    Портативный радиометр-спектрометр МКС-А03

  • spectrometers– determine the energy distribution of gamma radiation, measure the power of the ambient equivalent according to the characteristics - charge, mass, energy;

    Спектрометр энергии гамма-излучения сцинтилляционный портативный «ГАММА-1С/NB1-04»

  • universal tools– operate in several modes, combining the functions of a dosimeter, spectrometer, and radiometer.

Radiation monitoring tools and instruments must meet the standards and technical requirements in accordance with GOST.

Extent and measurement of radiation

To measure the level of radiation in the affected area, surface monitoring is used. It is necessary to check the degree of surface contamination with radionuclides. Samples are taken from the ground, surfaces of objects, equipment, roofs, and walls of buildings.

Special equipment is used for changes. To protect the device from radiation, put on a protective plastic cover. The device should not be brought closer than 3-6 cm to the contaminated surface.

The specialist carrying out the inspection must also be equipped with protective clothing that does not allow radiation to pass through, and respiratory and skin protection. There should be no open areas.

All instrument readings are recorded on paper and then logged. If there were people in the affected area, they are also subject to radiation monitoring before being evacuated to a safe area.

To check the degree of radioactive exposure, numerical indicators are used, which are measured in microsieverts. The indicator is calculated by power - the number of microsieverts over a period of time. Abbreviated designation: mSv/h.

The choice of instruments for measuring the degree of radiation depends on the tasks being performed. When choosing, you need to take into account the characteristics of the device, the range of measured values, sensitivity, and compatibility.

Under normal conditions, a device with a range of 0.2-500 mSv is sufficient for routine testing. In an emergency or emergency situation, more powerful equipment with an operating range of 10-5000 mSv is required.

Radiation safety

Group andindividual RKcarried out using dosimeters. They can be inspection or personal. Inspection instruments measure the extent and type of radioactive radiation. Using the device, you can determine the radiation dose and measure power indicators. To calculate the effective radiation dose to a person, the dosimeter readings are multiplied by the time people spent in the affected area.

For individual control, drives are used. These are dosimeters that determine the total degree of accumulated radiation level by a person. The inspection is carried out by an employee who is protected by personal protective equipment. The dosimeter must also be protected before entering the irradiated area. To do this, use special protective covers or hide individual devices under clothing.

Thermoluminescent cumulative dosimeters are used in medicine and industry. Using instruments, you can determine the degree of human exposure. The use of individual dosimeters makes it possible to timely determine the degree of radiation exposure of a person in order to direct him to treatment or to a safe area. The sooner radiation therapy measures are taken, the higher the chance of minimizing severe consequences.

Intelligence

If a major accident occurs that could lead to a radiation leak, it is necessary to organize mitigation measures as quickly as possible and determine the degree of danger. For this purpose, radiation reconnaissance is carried out. This is another radiation control measure.

Radiation reconnaissance is carried outlaw enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation, including special units of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and employees of the Ministry of Health. By special order, other specialists may be sent to the affected area.

To assess the radioactive situation at a large enterprise or open area, special reconnaissance vehicles are used. They automatically record the radiation dose, the radius of damage and transmit data to control points.

If a nuclear accident occurs due to a reactor failure or system depressurization, it is necessary to evacuate people from the affected area as quickly as possible, and also conduct a comprehensive reconnaissance. To do this, robotic equipment is sent to the affected area. The analysis is carried out on site in field laboratories.

In an emergency, reconnaissance is carried out by chemical troops, as they have all the necessary equipment and uniforms for a safe, effective operation. Their arsenal includes high-tech robotic systems, as well as protected transport - armored personnel carriers and drones.

Radiation control- an obligatory element of the defense of the country and the safety of the population, therefore it is assigned a significant role in the formation of the base. The state invests a lot of money in the development of safety and strengthens radiation control measures.
