Portable radiometer-spectrometer with the function of searching and localizing sources of ionizing radiation and identifying gamma radionuclides.

Purpose

  • Search and localization of radioactive materials
  • Identification of gamma-emitting radionuclides
  • Measurement of dose rate of gamma and neutron radiation
  • Alpha and beta particle flux density measurement

MKS-A03 is the main hand-held device used in Russia and abroad at customs and border posts, as well as as part of anti-terrorism protection systems for crowded facilities and transport infrastructure to confirm the presence and identification of sources of ionizing radiation in transport, cargo, pedestrians and luggage.

The device can be used for in-depth inspection of the object that triggered the alarm of a stationary radiation monitor.

The device was specially designed for use by personnel of any qualification in the field.

High sensitivity, convenience and ease of use can significantly reduce the time for reaction and decision making.

The radiometer-spectrometer is registered in the State Register of Measuring Instruments.

Design

MKS-A03 is designed as a compact portable device.

Inside the device there is a scintillation gamma detector based on a NaI(TI) or LaBr3(Ce) crystal, a Geiger-Muller counter and a scintillation neutron detector. An external alpha-beta detector is used to detect surface contamination and measure the density of alpha and beta particles. It is also possible to connect an external detector to register the DER of neutron radiation in a wide energy range (BDN-06M).

Temperature compensation of the gamma channel ensures measurement stability over a wide temperature range.

The use of a gamma detector based on LaBr3(Ce) allows increasing the resolution in identifying radionuclides. At customer's request, neutron detectors can be manufactured using He-3 counters.

The device is equipped with sound and light signaling for registration of gamma and neutron radiation (indicators of different colors are used to distinguish between alarms in the gamma and neutron channels).

Operating modes

Depending on the problem being solved, one of four modes is used:

  • “Search / m. dose”: search and measurement of dose rate
  • “Identification”: determination of nuclide composition
  • "Alpha / Beta": measurement of alpha and beta particle flux density (with external alpha-beta detector BDS-AB2)
  • "Neutron/m. dose": measurement of neutron radiation DER (with remote unit BDN-06M)

In the “Search” mode, the frequency of the sound and light signal changes as the ISS-A03 approaches the radiation source, which allows you to quickly and accurately determine the location of the radiation source.

Switching from the “Search/m. doses" into the "Identification" mode is performed by pressing one button.

The built-in neutron detector is calibrated by DER only for the characteristic emission spectrum of the Pu-Be source under the conditions of the testing facility. When measuring the DER of neutron radiation with an unknown energy distribution and/or in the presence of materials in the surrounding conditions that slow down and scatter neutrons (organics, water, etc.), an external neutron radiation detector BDN-06M should be used.

Modes of access to device functions

NORMAL MODE – provides the user with a simple and intuitive interface with operating tips and access to basic functions.

EXPERT MODE – allows flexible adjustment of device parameters and analysis of the obtained emission spectra.

The device provides data transfer to a computer with installed specialized software.

The values in the “Characteristics” section are given for the MKS-A03 in the maximum configuration.

Peculiarities

  • Sound and light signaling of gamma and neutron radiation registration using indicators of different colors and changing the indication frequency when approaching the radiation source
  • Intuitive user interface, the simplest possible control principle, operator tips
  • Switch from search mode to identification mode by pressing one button
