Working with a household dosimeter
Rules for using professional equipment
Dosimeter– a device for measuring background radiation levels in open areas or inside buildings. The device takes measurements from the air or from the surface of objects, and provides an analysis of the dose, power, and equivalent of radioactive radiation.
As radiation sources become more numerous, the need for improvement increases. Household radiation meters should be everywhere, and any average person should know how to use a dosimeter to check food, household items, and money.
Working with a household dosimeter
Before measuring radiation levels with a dosimeter, you should first use the instructions for use that come with the kit. If it is not nearby, you can take as a basis general recommendations that are suitable for different models.
Use of dosimeters:
- turn on the device;
- adjust settings or use automatic mode;
- measure background radiation at a distance of 2-3 meters from the object for a minute;
- bring the device to the object with its back side (detector location);
- make repeated measurements at a distance of 1-2 cm from the object if the background radiation level when measuring at a distance is not exceeded;
- Calculate the difference between the second and first results using the subtraction method.
The background radiation rate is 10-20 µR/h. Please note that the background radiation in the building will be higher than outside. The device should not be brought closer than 3-6 cm to the contaminated surface.
Rules for using professional equipment
Individualdevices are registered to employees under a specific serial number. Each official is assigned his own device. Before this, the responsible person is briefed and signs in the log book. Each employee receives not only an individual, but also a control device.
Instructions for usedosimeter:
- You cannot remove or put away the device, you must always have it with you;
- the detector of the device must be directed towards the radiation source;
- You cannot transfer the monitored device to third parties or throw it anywhere during the work shift;
- at the end of the work shift, the devices are handed over for signature, they are removed to the dosimeter storage area;
- Do not open or disassemble the device or carry out independent repairs;
- the use of the dosimeter is permitted only in accordance with its intended purpose;
- personal dosimeter readings are read within 24 hours after collection;
- If the device shows an excess of the permissible dose of radiation, it is necessary to inform management about this and take measures to eliminate the consequences.
Every month, employees (mostly women) undergo radiation dose monitoring at waist level. It is recommended to carry the device in your chest pocket.
